Somatic Shake It Off

Greetings Fellow Souls With Bodies!
The word “somatic” is everywhere these days and simply means “relating to the body, especially as distinct from the mind.” When we focus on moving our body, we disconnect from the overthinking-hyperdrive-always on high alert mind. Ever take a walk to “clear your head?” That’s somatic exercise.
Back in the day on Grey’s Anatomy, Meredith and Christina often ended their stressful days by dancing it out. They put on a song, jumped up and down, swung their arms, twirled around and did whatever the body wanted to do to release the gunk of the day. That is what Emily Fell curates for us at Ecstatic/Somatic Dance nights each month.
The term Ecstatic Dance was used before Somatic became the buzzword and at first it put me off. I assumed ecstatic meant high energy nonstop movement.
Ecstatic Dance simply means move your body however you want. Free flow to the music. No set dance moves. Just move in whatever ways the body feels. No talking. No judgment. No looking at each other. Just be in your own little world.
Emily curates a safe place to feel comfortable. It’s meditative and mood boosting. All ages, all genders. If your body simply wants to sit and stretch, that’s fine too. This night is for you to honor your body. I encourage you to give it a try.
