Hold the door open

ree

I wrote this in 2017; perhaps it resonates today.

What do you do when it seems the world has gone crazy?

You keep showing up. You keep being you.

If you sing, belt it out. If you tell jokes, make ‘em laugh. If you are a hairdresser, cut, style and blow it out, baby. Be the best of you.

When you waddle on being the best you, you are an advocate for human kindness, caring, and compassion. When you are gracious and pleasant and patient, you are a beacon of hope for someone else who is feeling a little frazzled. You can be the calm, the unwitting port in their storm, simply by being you.

I’ve often told the story of a gal who came to my Happiness Club meetings long ago who shared an incident that happened at the gas station after work. She said, “It was the busy time of day, everyone rushed and harried and wanting to get home. I ran in to grab a gallon of milk and held the door open for a lady coming out with her arms full. That lady thanked me and began to cry. She said that was the nicest thing that anyone had done for her all day. All I did was hold the door open.”

ALL I DID WAS HOLD THE DOOR OPEN.

Literally and figuratively.

Keep holding the door open, people! The door to kindness. The door to empathy. The door to connection.

Even a modicum of kindness has effects more far reaching than you know.

As Albert Schweitzer said, “Sometimes our light goes out but is blown into flame by another human being. Each of us owes deepest thanks to those who have rekindled this light.”

Reignite someone’s flame. It doesn’t take much. Just a tiny little puff.

All human behavior boils down to: we act out of fear or we act from love.

Make a conscious choice to act from love.

Make a conscious decision to hold the door open. You never know the wondrous shift that can happen. For someone else, -- and for you.

Much love.

In service to Spirit.
