A lesson from the squirrels

I wrote this blog many years ago. It popped up today so I'm sharing it here.
The squirrels are out in full force, leaping from tree to tree to tree with no fear. They fly from a sturdy branch to a teeny tiny skinny little twig, hanging on while that little twig bounces and swings and jiggles and wiggles. Undaunted, the squirrel continues on along the highway of trees and branches and wispy twigs.
Never do I see a squirrel pause and second guess himself. He jumps from branch to twig to power line to tree, never doubting if he can make it. Never wondering if that little branch can hold his weight. Never making a list of pros and cons, never calling a friend for a pep talk, never taking just one more course to make sure he has it all figured out.
He just jumps. His trust muscle is part of his nature.
How is your trust muscle? It IS part of our nature!
For most of us, as we age the trust muscle gets atrophied because we are surrounded with well-meaning folks constantly telling us to be careful, take it slow, be cautious.
I do not advocate "reckless" behavior but we have forgotten how to exercise our trust muscle because we have forgotten we have it. The Play it Safe muscle seems to have taken over.
We are creatures of habit, yet we can unlearn. We can let go of ingrained habits and patterns of thinking. We can be like that squirrel who lets go and jumps always trusting that it will support him even if it looks a little shaky.
We can tune back into our internal guidance, our natural knowing. This spring, take a cue from the critters. Practice more trust, in all things, especially yourself. With each baby step and each leap, you build that trust muscle. Day by day, you get stronger.
It’s a practice, tuning in to the wisdom inside. The more you do, the more you see you can trust it. You are an amazing creature. You have desires and you have abilities. The combination of that in you is unlike that in anyone else. TRUST that you can express.
Start listening more to your inner guidance. Trusting it, acting on it, and noticing when magic happens because of it.
Thank you, squirrels. (Now please stay off my bird feeders.)
Much love,
Kelly
